The problem relates to Dynamic IntimateShared Memory (DISM). There's a bug inSolaris (bug:15794950) which relates to unnecessary page-mapping operations andthread blocking, (Doc ID: 1475621.1 on MOS) and it seems that DISM tries to useswap for this. On a server with 255 GBof memory, swap size is that last problem I expected, but there wasinsufficient swap available to support these operations. Consequently the database startup eventuallytimed out from the extra overhead and produced the errors described above.
Apparently there are patches now availableas follows, which I am yet to investigate and apply:
